Creative Living is Not Just for The Young

Hello Friends,

Happy Fall! This morning is crisp and cool, and so beautiful! I love this time of year! Fueling my creativity, I’m looking forward to writing and enjoying my coffee outdoors on some of these fall mornings. My creative life brings me such joy!

We just returned from Texas to spend time with my dad and family. We took him out to the lake to get out of the house, and he really enjoyed it. My elderly dad finds joy in creative living, even on a small scale.

Age does not limit creative living. I created the quote that creativity is not just for the young when I was on my first hike in a beautiful Iowa park where my son and his wife live. At 59, my first hike truly happened. As we trekked the trail through the lush green trees and vegetation, I simply enjoyed my beautiful surroundings and the time with my family. However, the highlight was when we finally reached a clearing that revealed a beautiful lake with shimmering waters and people on boats lazily enjoying the afternoon sun.

During my amazement and awe at the beauty, I told myself that creative living is not just for the young. We should all get out of our comfort zones and enjoy fresh adventures. It should be common for folks over 50 to travel, see unfamiliar sights, and enjoy fresh sounds.

Creative living is exhilarating! Exhilaration is something my over-50 squad can use as we get older. I love trying new things. However, sometimes, I allow fear to overtake me. Now, that is where my husband comes into play. He truly believes in getting out and trying fresh adventures.

Coming from a military family, he inherited his zest for travel from his parents. The family travels opened his mind to creative living as a child. His parents instilled in him the urge to seek adventures and live life fully.

In contrast, I came from a large family and our vacations were usually within a two-hour range. I guess if you’ve never experienced something; you don’t know what you’re missing. However, we still had a wonderful life, even if we were not travelers.

Although, once I met Phillip, my life changed! Our first large-scaled trip was to Paris, France. Wow! Talk about out of your comfort zone! Seeing the Seine River flow through the city was a TV-like sight. Walking the halls of the Castle of Versailles is a lifelong memory.

Now, we were not over 50 when we experienced this international vacation, but we should not allow ourselves to stop seeking these adventures. We should continue to add bucket list items to our itinerary and enjoy life. While we still have time, our goal is to live and enjoy life creatively.

For those just starting their writing journey, I’m also offering a free excerpt of my “Blueprint for Beginning Writers.” It’s my way of giving back and encouraging others to embrace their creative potential.

  1. Shelly, thank you for the kind word, however, my best adventures were the ones with you by my side. You made them special. Thank you very much. Let’s continue to explore new adventures both near and far.
