Hello Friends!
It’s January 21, 2025! You won’t believe it’s snowing in South Mississippi! What a beautiful sight!
Phillip and I are snuggled in, enjoying the time to rest and watch our favorite shows. However, we’re still working on my book and preparing to get the word out about my new book If You Don’t Vote, You Don’t Count: Vernon Dahmer’s Fight for Equality. So, with the quiet time, I’m reflecting on my self-publishing journey.
The journey of self-publishing my nonfiction children’s picture book biography has been an incredible and rewarding experience. I waited over 20 years for this time!
But, like any journey, it came with its own set of challenges and learning moments. There were many days that I didn’t think it would ever happen, dealing with imposter syndrome and self-doubt. But I never gave up and embraced the challenge!
As I reflect on this adventure, I wanted to share ten things I wish I had known before I started this process. I hope these insights can help and inspire fellow aspiring authors!
1. The Importance of a Solid Outline
Creating a detailed outline before writing can save you time and headaches. It helps keep your narrative and manuscript focused and covers all key points effectively. Over the years, I wrote numerous versions of my picture book that went nowhere. I was hard on myself for not making headway in my writing life, but after I retired and got serious, with a solid outline, I got the book on the right track.
2. Finding the Right Illustrator is Crucial
The illustrations in a picture book are just as important as the text. Take your time to find an illustrator whose style matches your vision. Discovering Jackson Muthoni on Fiverr was a game-changer for me. I didn’t think I would ever find someone with such talent within my budget, but I’m so thankful he worked with me, allowing me to work on a timeline that fit my retiree budget.
3. Invest in Professional Editing
Even the best writers need editors. A professional editor can provide invaluable feedback, catch errors you might have missed, and help polish your manuscript to perfection. This is a step that you cannot skip. Along the way, I had three editors with different skills that helped move the project.
4. Understanding Book Formatting
Book formatting is more complex than it seems. Hiring a professional book formatter ensures that your book looks great and is easily read, with all the elements correctly placed. At one point, I could format my book independently. However, after seeing a professional formatter’s work, I will never attempt this again. Her formatting made all of the difference to the final product.
5. Creating an Eye-Catching Cover
Your book cover is the first thing potential readers will see. Investing in a professional, eye-catching cover design can make a massive difference in attracting readers. I had my illustrator create a cover image for me, and I hired a company called Get Covers to create a cover for me. I liked their finished product, but I didn’t love it. Long story short, my book formatter created a cover, and I loved it. So, it’s good to be flexible and have a couple of cover ideas before you make a final decision.
6. Marketing Starts Early
Don’t wait until your book is published to start marketing. Build your audience early by sharing your journey on social media, creating a website, and engaging with your potential readers. I don’t think I did enough marketing; therefore, I’m playing catch-up. I was nervous about the whole process and kept the project private. However, I now see the importance of pre-orders and early marketing.
7. The Value of ISBNs and Copyrights
Obtaining an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and registering your copyright are essential steps in protecting your work and ensuring it’s professionally recognized in the market. Have your own ISBN. The cost can reach your budget, but it’s a good investment because it allows you to place your book on different platforms.
8. The Power of Reviews
Reviews can significantly impact your book’s success. Encourage early readers to leave reviews and consider contacting book bloggers and influencers in your genre. Reviews are critical and challenging to obtain, so encourage your readers to leave as many reviews as possible.
9. Choosing the Right Publishing Platform
Different publishing platforms offer various benefits. Research and choose the one that best fits your needs, whether Amazon KDP, Ingram Spark, or another service. This is very important! I’m still trying to figure this out. KDP is showing up well for me, and we’re learning about Ingram Spark. Although, there are other platforms out there that could benefit your self-publishing journey. I’m researching those and hope to give you more information later.
10. The Emotional Rollercoaster is Real
Self-publishing is a journey filled with highs and lows. There will be moments of doubt and frustration, as well as immense joy and satisfaction. Embrace the process and stay resilient. Don’t give up on your dreams!
